They made it possible for the average American to have high quality, comfortable flooring. In a North Carolina mill during the 1920’s, Marshall Field & Co. created an exciting and innovative product – machine-made oriental design rugs of high quality at realistic prices. These elegant new rugs, almost impossible to distinguish from imported originals, were introduced in 1928 and the flooring industry has never been the same. By the 1930s Karastan was introducing carpet innovations such as multi-colored designs and cut-and-loop effects all at affordable prices for average consumers.
Fun facts in Karastan’s history:
- More than 5 million people left their footprints, spills and ground-in food stains all over Karastan’s “Wonder Rug”at Chicago’s World Fair in 1933. When it was time for cleanup, they cleaned half the rug so people could see how well Karastan rugs recover. The rug still exists in the same state today—one side almost unrecognizably filthy, the other returned to its original beauty and luster.
- In 1977 Karastan developed the first designer carpet with famous fashion icon Halston.
- Karastan carpets have appeared in the White House, New York’s Metropolitan Opera House and a special room in Fairbanks, Alaska where Pope John Paul II met with President Reagan in 1984.
