Popular tile floor choices

Published: August 31, 2017

Is ceramic tile the best choice for your kitchen? What are the design options from porcelain tile? Are there tile options that are unique but still practical? Tile flooring’s design options are so varied that it can be hard to keep up with the options for your floor. If you’re considering tile for your next flooring project, take some time to learn more about popular tile flooring styles. Catching up with tile trends can help you find a floor that will be durable and stylish for years to come.

Light gray tile with a subtle pattern is both trendy and timeless.

Porcelain tile opens up size options

Manufacturers are using versatile porcelain tile to create all new options for your floor. Today’s trends lean towards large format tiles – think 15 inches or larger. These super-size tiles completely change the look of the floor, particularly in a large open kitchen or great room. In addition to very large tiles, manufacturers are also developing ways to make very slim tiles. The thinner the tile, the less weight on your floor and the more flexibility you have for installation. In some cases, thin tiles can even be installed on top of an old tile floor.

Look-alike tiles

Another thing that porcelain, in particular, is good at is mimicking other designs. For years homeowners have desired high-end flooring such as marble or wood, but not been able to have it because of price constraints or installation requirements. Tile is making the look of nearly all materials available at a lower price point, higher durability and more practical installation needs. Porcelain tile has a top layer that is designed to look just like marble, cement, wood, fabric or other materials. New manufacturing techniques are bringing a whole new practicality to tile floors.

Light colored tile

One final tile trend to consider is color. Extremes tend to be trendy right now – think dark espresso or bright white. You might want to be cautious in jumping on that trend simply because your tile floor may outlast the trend. Instead, look at lighter shades of tile to get the same open, bright feel but with a color that isn’t going to look out of date in seven years. Which colors are popular here at Kermans Indianapolis tile store? Gray tiles are perhaps the most popular but we’re also noticing more and more people trend towards a blonde wood look or whitewashed wood look in their tile.

Why choose tile flooring?

Tile is a very functional choice for your floor but also one that offers you plenty of design flexibility. Tile’s many styles, shapes, patterns, colors and can give you just the look you want in any room of the house. Whether you’re seeking a simple layout or an intricate pattern, tile can be the perfect choice for you. Tile is…
