Picking the perfect area rug

Published: December 23, 2014

Area rugs can be the perfect addition to your flooring. Perhaps you’re looking to update your decor but don’t have the budget to change the entire floor. Or maybe you have a large space that feels too jumbled, an area rug can be the perfect way to help define areas within a large room. Area rugs add warmth to hardwood – a nice bonus if you have hardwood in the bedroom and are looking for a warmer spot to place your feet in the morning. Area rugs create an inviting entryway when added to a foyer. Area rugs might just be the most versatile flooring available! So let’s help you pick just the right area rug for your needs.

Step 1: Define the use

The first question you need to ask yourself: How is this area rug going to be used? Is it going in a high traffic area such as a hallway or kitchen? Is it going to be in a low traffic area such as a formal dining room or bedroom? Area rugs are made from a variety of materials. Some are handmade and others are machine-made. All of them are excellent additions to your home – when placed in the appropriate space. Check out the following infographic that helps guide you to the right type of area rug for your home.

Step 2: Pick the design

Now that you’ve determined which type of area rug is best for your needs, it’s time to get subjective. Area rugs come in a variety of colors, patterns and shapes. Their diversity is one of their best characteristics as a floor covering. But it can also be overwhelming.

Traditional handmade vs machine-made
Traditional handmade rugs are truly works of art. They take years to make and can last for decades when cared for properly. To the naked eye, machine-made rugs look identical to traditional oriental rugs. And they make these beautiful works of art more accessible to people with different budgets. We carry both types of rugs and are happy to talk through the benefits of each with you. Learn more about area rug types.

We started in business over 90 years ago by focusing on area rugs. You won’t find an Indianapolis flooring store that knows more about area rugs than Kermans. After we narrow down the handmade vs machine-made choice, we’ll help talk you through the right color, size and shape.

Surprised to see shape on that list? Area rugs don’t just come in rectangles or circles. In fact, a custom, free-form bound carpet—like this example by Karastan—can be the perfect fit to tie together a space and design.
