If you’re looking to update your carpet this year, there are some fun and creative ways to incorporate current trends into your design plans to keep your home looking stylish for years to come.

Carpet usually covers large areas, which means color makes a big impact. Consider the size of the room when choosing your color. Light colored carpet makes rooms seem more open, and darker carpeting will make a room feel cozier.

Create contrast with color

More and more interior designers are contrasting colors, textures, and patterns to create appealing rooms with a modern look and feel, without seeming outdated. Bold colors are exciting, and they work well in small- to mediums-sized rooms. To make this look work, pick a textured and/or patterned carpet in a neutral shade (like dark charcoal) and add accents (like throw pillows and drapes) in contrasting-yet-complimentary dramatic colors.

Keep in mind that the colors you choose affect you. Color affects mood, energy, productivity and intimacy. Warmer colors such as reds, oranges and yellows tend to increase the energy of a space. Cooler hues such as grays, blues, greens and purples create a more relaxed atmosphere. If you want to create a calm, soothing space look at the color of your carpet to lend a hand.

Gray is here to stay

Speaking of dark charcoal, it’s nearly impossible to talk about carpet color trends without talking about gray. Gray is today’s neutral, and it continues to grow in popularity for homeowners. From dark slate to light smoke, the color gray creates a calm, welcoming atmosphere, and it provides a balanced foundation for any type of furniture.

Hues inspired by nature

Next year, colors inspired by nature are making a big comeback. To get the look, pick shades of green, blue, or brown to design an inviting, cozy feel.

For spaces where carpet is impractical, such as kitchens and bathrooms, think about accenting in nature-inspired hues using glass tile. Glass tile accents capture and reflect light, and through this design feature they can make your space come alive and feel more open.

Have fun with geometric patterns

Beige and browns will always be popular because they are simple. However, these “vanilla” choices can be trendy if used with textures. Strong lines and tone-on-tone designs highlight the versatility of neutral tones. The added benefit of patterns is they hide soil marks and don’t show wear from foot traffic as much.
