Kermans is an Indianapolis flooring store with a wide variety of carpet, wood flooring, tile and area rugs. We’ve been in business since 1921 and can be found on the northside of Indy in the Castleton area – easily accessible from I-465. Our decades of experience have made us Indianapolis’ flooring experts. Have a question about wood flooring? We have the answer.

What is the best way to clean hardwood floors?

Perhaps the most important thing to know about your hardwood floors is that they do not like water. Keep the wet mops for your tile floors. For hardwood, sweep or dust mop on a regular basis. This seems so simple, but keeping dirt and debris off the hardwood is the easiest way to keep the finish scratch-free and unscuffed. See more tips on our Hardwood cleaning video:

What is the difference between hardwood flooring and laminate flooring?

Solid hardwood flooring is made from planks of natural wood. The wood commonly comes from oak or maple trees but can also come from walnut, cherry or more exotic tree species. With proper maintenance and the occasional refinishing, solid wood flooring will last the lifetime of your home.

Laminate and engineered wood floors offer the look and feel of hardwood but without the high price tag. Laminate floors are made from resin or fiber board that is then topped with a photographic layer designed to withstand wear and tear. Engineered wood floors are a combination of hardwood and laminate – with the wood core of a laminate floor but a hardwood veneer on top.

People are often surprised at the variety of wood flooring that is available. Learn more about the best wood floor options in Indianapolis.

Can I use wood flooring in my basement?

Yes and no. Solid hardwood is not recommended for use in basements because basements tend to be susceptible to water damage that will ruin the floor. However, laminate or engineered wood’s water-resistant qualities make it more desirable for basement flooring. It is also typically installed over a pad which helps lend your basement some warmth since it adds an extra layer over the concrete sub-floor. You can easily soften up a wood floor with area rugs. And its finishes are extremely durable which is a definite plus in a room that is likely to see quite a bit of traffic and entertaining.
